An ambitious and driven man, Roderick expects the most out of his six children, giving them access to every resource imaginable — except his fatherly affection.

Gunning’s breakout role could also boost the chances of her co-star Nava Mau, who plays the love interest Teri, garnering attention for her performance. The Fall of the House of Usher is Flanagan’s take on Edgar Allan Poe’s 1839 short story of the same name - but much like we saw with The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan has added his own ‘fresh, freaky twist on it’. The initial project announcement of The Fall of the House of Usher revealed that Mike Flanagan would direct four episodes and Michael Fimognari would direct the other four episodes. Fans of Mike Flanagan may recognize many of the names from previous projects, including The Midnight Club and the well-reviewed film adaptation of Doctor Sleep.
It Won’t Be Like Any Other Mike Flanagan Project
As a parent himself, Roderick doesn’t fare much better, having six children by five different women who range from obnoxious hedonists (Napoleon and Prospero Usher) to despicable creeps (Frederick, Tamerlane and Victoria) to obnoxious, despicable hedonist creeps (Camille). The family is made up of Flanagan’s regular ensemble of actors, and to buy them as relatives requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but for Flanagan fans, there’s great fun to be had seeing how these favourites fit into his new tale of terror. Alongside his favoured players is Mark Hamill as an unfeeling lawyer/fixer for the Usher family who sounds as if he gargles a pint of nails every morning.
Emmy Awards Predictions
But as we know from the start, there’s no point in getting overly attached to them, as grisly fates are assured for all. It’s not so much the “what” as the “why” that the audience and Dupin need to be answered. Under the Skin director Jonathan Glazer's haunting Holocaust drama is now streaming on Max. Christian Friedel plays Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp, while Sandra Hüller is his wife Hedwig. The film follows the mundanities of their family's domestic life in an idyllic house in the shadow of the camp and has been praised for its portrayal of the banality of evil.
According to Variety, the series follows the wealthy Usher siblings as they must deal with skeletons from their past. In the same article, Flanagan confirms that supernatural elements will be at play in this story. Roderick has come from a miserable childhood with a puritanical, sickly mother who believes that “pain and suffering are the kiss of Jesus”.
The Fall of The House Of Usher Has A Huge Cast That Includes Mark Hamill And Bruce Greenwood
As the eldest, Frederick Usher is the natural heir to his father’s company, but out of all of his siblings, he’s the least equipped to do so. While his neuroses make him an easy target for his siblings, Freddie’s fiery jealousy and compounding insecurity force him down a path that even those closest to Freddie are shocked to see. Incredibly intelligent, driven, and calculating, Madeline has always been the brains behind Fortunato. Whenever her brother falters, she’s always there to give him a push, making them a formidable duo. While she loves Roderick, her unrelenting drive and desire for success wouldn’t hold her back from stepping over him, if need be.

The Fall of the House of Usher review – a gleefully terrifying take on Edgar Allan Poe

“She sort of looks like me after I put on four stone during lockdown but I’m not actually unattractive,” the anonymous woman told Daily Mail, referring to the actress’ appearance in the show. On Facebook, Harvey reiterated that she is “not Martha,” and claimed she is being “attacked” online by viewers of the show who believe she inspired the character. Gadd has claimed he “disguised” the person who inspired Martha’s character so well that he doesn’t think she would “recognize” herself — but amateur internet sleuths have attempted to deduce her identity despite his pleas to stop. “Baby Reindeer” has become an instant phenomenon on Netflix, rocketing to No. 1 on the streaming service in 30 countries, including the US.
When I'm not writing about pop culture, I can be found channeling Gordon Ramsay by kicking people out the kitchen. Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) attends a joint funeral for a number of his adult children, and in a montage of press coverage, we see how a series of “freak accidents” has wiped out his entire bloodline. The Usher patriarch then sits in a dilapidated mansion with Carl Lumbly’s Auguste Dupin (based on Poe’s famous recurring character who is considered the first detective in fiction) and offers him a confession. We then flash back a few weeks to when the Usher clan were on top of the world, having become Sackler-esque billionaires peddling opiates that have inflicted untold misery on the American public, and begin to watch their painful demise.
Napoleon “Leo” Usher is a video game patron and the closest to a socialite the Usher siblings get. A “playboy” with a drug for every occasion, Leo welcomes the ability to numb the pain of his reality, but his drug use has started to become a problem for his boyfriend, Julius. “The Last of Us,” “Poker Face,” “Bluey,” “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” are among this year’s additional nominees as the Peabody Awards’ board of jurors revealed 27 nods for its arts, children’s/youth, entertainment, and interactive & immersive categories. They join the 41 nominees across its documentary, news, public service and radio/podcast categories announced by Peabody earlier this week. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character. On Twitter, Mike Flanagan announced that The Fall of the House of Usher would feature the largest ensemble in his production company’s history.
The first actors announced were Frank Langella, Carla Gugino, Mary McDonnell, Carl Lumbly, and Mark Hamill. Flanagan also revealed Langella would lead the ensemble cast as Roderick Usher, the head of the Usher dynasty. Though Mike Flanagan’s Netflix TV show is titled The Fall of the House of Usher, that will only be one of the Edgar Allan Poe stories that the show references.

The movie was nominated for five Oscars and won Best International Feature Film and Best Sound. From Oscar-winning movies to your next binge-watch, there are plenty of great new releases to get stuck into this weekend. For starters, if you're missing your Sandman fix, Netflix has you covered with new spin-off series Dead Boy Detectives.
He took on Shirley Jackson in The Haunting of Hill House (which was fabulous), Henry James in The Haunting of Bly Manor (spooky but saccharine) and Christopher Pike in The Midnight Club (meh). Thankfully, Flanagan and Poe’s sensibilities prove a winning pairing, staying on the edge of terror without cascading into jump scares and sentimentality. Guilt permeates every frame of Flanagan’s Poe universe, and buys into not so much the horror as the terror. Described by Frederick as “Gucci Caligula,” Perry is the youngest of the Usher children. Having only recently been thrust into the life of the ultra-rich, Perry’s goal is to make life one big party, and he’s hoping to use his family’s money to achieve just that.
Admittedly, there was a spectacular segment in an early Treehouse of Horror Simpsons Halloween special, but with The Fall of the House of Usher, Mike Flanagan proves just as adept as Matt Groening or Corman at bringing Poe to the screen. Feast your eyes on a new clip above and learn more about the limited series below. Her warmth and trusting nature always helped her to find the best in Roderick… and her trust in her husband might have left her blind to the dangers encroaching her family.
The Fall of the House of Usher will act as the main starting point for the series, but Intrepid Pictures, Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s production company, announced on its official Instagram page that the TV show would be based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Flanagan finishes his Netflix contract on a high, gleefully capturing Poe’s magic, eerie romance and sense of dread. His shows have become the streaming service’s best offerings for spooky season, and it is hard to imagine how that void will be filled. It’s not perfect – the order in which the Poe family meet their fates is a case of diminishing returns, as its most intriguing members are dispatched too quickly. Some of the CGI, particularly one scene involving bodies falling from the sky, is unintentionally funny.
“People I love, have worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly getting caught up in speculation,” Gadd wrote on his Instagram story this week. A woman who claims to have inspired the unhinged lead character in the new Netflix series “Baby Reindeer” says she is considering suing the streamer for defamation. Flanagan has previously adapted the works of Shirley Jackson, Henry James, and Christopher Pike for Netflix. He’s currently taking on Mr. “The Raven” himself, Edgar Allan Poe, with a new Netflix limited series based on The Fall of the House of Usher.
Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off series Knuckles sees Idris Elba reprise his voice role as the hot-headed titular echidna, while Adam Pally is back as deputy sheriff Wade Whipple – who Knuckles has set out to train in the ways of the Echidna warrior. Expect guest appearances from Ben Schwartz's Sonic and Colleen O'Shaughnessey's Tails, as well as turns from Cary Elwes, Julian Barratt, and Ellie Taylor. The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey is on board as showrunner and all eight episodes are streaming now.
